The Anonymous hacking group first appeared around 2006, when it main- ly focused on nuisance attacks such as uploading porn to YouTube dis- guised as child-friendly videos. In 2009, it reawakened in order to protect civil rights, since which it has carried out numerous high-profile at- tacks, most notably in support of Wikileaks and civil uprisings in the Middle East. The hacktivist collective has be- come known for high-profile attacks on official and government websites including those in Germany, Zimba- bwe, Syria and Egypt. Many of these actions were said to be in response to what it says is inter- net censorship, including the suppres- sion of documents from Wikileaks, or in support of uprisings under repres- sive regimes. Internet security expert Eugene Kaspersky responded to the video on Twitter, writing: The news around Anonymous to attack Facebook on November 5 most probably is fake. The Anonymous group posted a video warning of the attack, saying: Facebook knows more about you than your family. A video posted on YouTube claim- ing to be from Anonymous warned: Your medium of communication you all so dearly adore will be destroyed. Amid claims by chief executive Paul OBrien someone could be killed if the violence persists, Mr Quinn said the new boss had implied he was interfering in his old business. Mr OBrien also accused Mr Quinn of refusing to renounce the violence despite a letter from the board and a subsequent appeal. Mr Quinn reacted angrily, warning he has told police in the North anyone trying to sabotage Quinn Group property or intimidate staff was not acting in his name. Mr Quinn, who was stripped of his debt-laden empire in April, said his condemnation had been widely reported and was repeated on Tuesday, hours after the arson attack on Mr OBriens home in Ratoath, Co Meath. The incident, which saw his car damaged and windows smashed, was the latest in a string of attacks the company has branded sinister and an act of terrorism. The chief executive said he had an idea who was behind the attacks but had to be careful over the security of his family.
