18 FEATURES Wednesday, August 18, 2010 D FurtherEducationSupplement Institute Of Project Management The Institute Of Project Management (IPM) celebrates its 20th birthday this year. With a reputation for excellent faculty and a world-class curriculum, prospective students can be confident its Certified Project Management Diploma meets the Institutes exacting criteria. The Certified Project Management Diploma, which is an evening programme, provides participants with immediate international accreditation as part of a community of 120,000 project management professionals from 50 countries. There are no further exams or fees required. No other organisation in Ireland can offer direct professional accreditation as an integral part of its programmes, according to IPM. Obtaining certification from the International Project Management Association (IPMA) along with 2,000 other such professionals in Ireland can go a long way to enhancing employment prospects and getting recognition in the workplace. In an era where job stability and security is no longer a given, many individuals are seeking to protect and enhance their area of expertise. Project management accreditation is seen by many as a bridge to enable transition from an existing role or to other industry sectors. Those seeking to bolster their CV by adopting this approach are also becoming much more sophisticated about the reputation and brand of the programme provider as well as the type of professional project management accreditation offered. Internationally recognised accreditation with credentials that really matter is paramount. Visit www.projectmanagement.ie for further details. Business: An MBA could be your passport to a first-class executive career Fly business class Making it: MBA graduates not only see a significant increase in their salaries, but also forge important contacts during their time studying IIPMM offers subsidised degree A Masters in Business Administration is a serious commitment with fees costing up to 29,000 and the course lasting a year full-time or two years part-time. So do the rewards justify the time and expense? According to the most recent data available, four fifths of all MBA graduates deemed the qualification so worthwhile that they would fund the fees themselves. A survey of graduates carried out for the MBA Association of Ireland by Amrach Consulting found that the degree resulted in significant career change and professional growth, whether through promotion (44 per cent), change of position (39 per cent) or change of employer (39 per cent). More than 55 per cent of MBA holders saw their salaries increase by 20 per cent or more in the two years following graduation. There are more institutions offering MBAs in Ireland than ever from the traditional options of Trinity and the Smurfit Business School at UCD, to DIT, the Open University and the Irish Management Institute. So what does an MBA teach that is different from other business degrees? Most courses teach core subjects such as management, economics, leadership, statistics, financial reporting and strategy. This wide base gives the student flexibility to manage in any sector. MBAs also include elective options that allow you to specialise in the area of business you are interested in such as finance or entrepreneurship. According to Liam Fennelly, president of the MBA Association of Ireland: Analysing business is at the heart of the MBA programme. The MBA gives you the ability to drill down to find out where the core problems are. Of course, an MBA cant guarantee a job, especially in the current environment, but it does give you the tools to go out there and do something. Another benefit of doing an MBA is the contacts you make most graduates find they have acquired a network for life. Youre studying in a group of similarly minded people, says Fennelly. You can share your ideas and problems with them. I know people who are still in touch with those they did the course with up to 30 years ago. An MBA provides a lot of support mechanisms. Although having an MBA is not a prerequisite for an executive career, it definitely will help. Given that 6,500 CEOs, senior managers and entrepreneurs in Ireland hold the qualification, getting an MBA of your own is one way to join their ranks. In these challenging times, many are seeking to upskill. According to Des Crowther, CEO of the Irish Institute of Purchasing and Materials Management (IIPMM), a business degree with a specialisation in procurement and supply management can open up a variety of career options. The IIPMM has been granted funding from Skillnets to help individuals to finance their studies. Moreover, jobseekers can avail of a full scholarship. The IIPMM provides a HETAC- accredited education programme up to degree level. Its Higher Certificate offers purchasing and supply professionals and those entering the field an in-depth knowledge of all aspects of the function. Graduates will then have the opportunity to further progress their studies in the Bachelor of Business courses. This is a unique opportunity to gain the professional qualifications delivered by the IIPMM. Visit www.iipmm.ie for further details.
