D Friday, July 30, 2010 metrolife 19 mark Gainsbourg (15) Running time: 122min It is to Lunar Diskos credit that their adherence to Italo Disco, Chicago trax and bass-heavy electro has seen them flourish and has lead to the label of the same name proving itself to be one of Irelands finest independents. This weekend the club celebrates its fourth birthday in style, getting Italian veteran Marco Passarani and Creme artist Rude 66, who has performed one of the best live electro sets weve seen, to help them blow out the candles. Tomorrow, Lunar Disko, Twisted Pepper, Middle Abbey Street D1, 11pm, 10. Frank Timm is one of the unsung heroes of underground techno and house. Working as Smith n Hack with Errorsmith, he has remixed Herbert and Ricardo Villalobos, but he flies solo as Soundstream for his Irish debut tonight. Expect his set to cover diverse bases, from classic disco and Chicago house to the stark swagger of contemporary Berlin techno. Tonight, Nightflight, The Button Factory, Curved Street, Temple Bar D2, 11pm, 10. Although Giles Smith and James Priestleys decision to set up a deep house Sunday night in London a few years back may have seemed like a folly at the time, hindsight has vindicated them. Since then, Secretsundaze (pictured) has spawned mix CDs, gigs all over Europe and two of the UKs finest house DJs. Theyre sure to leave Dublin in a daze. Richard Brophy Sun, Pygmalion, Sth William Street D2, 6pm, 10. Rude 66 & Marco Passarani / Soundstream / Secretsundaze GIG Theres rarely a quiet moment in Jens Lekmans world. When his last album came out in 2007, hed just been voted tenth sexiest man in Sweden and had recently returned to music after a hiatus working in a Gothenburg bingo hall. Coming back to Dublin, the blue-eyed miserabalist think Morrissey fronting a one-man Belle & Sebastian is recovering from a bout of swine flu contracted during a tour of Chile. Hes also been busily collaborating with Drew Barrymore (he contributed a song to her skate punk romp Whip It!) and Tracey Thorn of Everything But The Girl. I was absolutely in love with her when I was 13, he says. Shes a person I admire a lot. Clearly the respect flows both ways. On her hit single Oh, The Divorces, Thorn actually addresses a line directly to Lekman. Shes older and is married and has kids. Im still young and stupid and travelling the world, he says. Thats what she is talking about in that song. Ever since, everything I have written has been an attempt to respond to her. Specialising in wry, often hilarious, observational pop, Lekman is sometimes typecast as Europes answer to Stephin Merritt of the Magnetic Fields. I dont get that, he says. Ive never even really listened to him. Or to Morrissey, but thats okay because it lets me continue to rip off the artists I admire. Ive been ripping off Jonathan Richman for years and nobody has noticed. Eamon de Paor Sun, Whelans, 25 Wexford Street, D2, 8pm, 17.50. And I actually still dont know that much more about him after enjoying this dazzling French biopic other than (a) he was born to Russian/Jewish parents during Nazi occupation and grew up paranoid about being ugly and Jewish (b) he shagged Brigitte Bardot (inexplicable, given that he looked like something coughed up by a diseased oyster) (c) he smoked a lot. Avoid this movie if youre trying to give up fags, its a full frontal nicotine orgy. I obviously know Gainsbourgs real life like the back of my hand, declares comic book artist Joann Sfar, helpfully, in his directors statement. But I couldnt care less about the truth. I want to make a cult film, not a journalistic account of his life. Et voil he has. This swirls in cheeky animation, cutting the narrative up into vivid, disconnected snap shots, and giving Gainsbourg (uncanny lookalike Eric Elmosnino) an imaginary double with a Frank Sidebottom-type head, a pantomime Jewish nose and Edward Scissorhands fingers. Sfar calls his film un conte a fairytale. Though ultimately hollow, its still a heady, strange and diverting music biopic that walks a refreshingly different path to Walk The Line. LI-Z Hi-ya: Newcomer Jaden Smith, son of Will, is Dre Parker in The Karate Kid clubbInG fIve questIons for... Youre playing Truly Scrumptious, surely the best named character youve ever played? I think so. Its a little embarrassing when people ask what character I play. I always go a little red when declaring myself as Scrumptious, and I get a few dodgy looks. Most people say I look very different off-stage without the wig and make-up. Not sure how I feel about that! How would you describe her? Truly is a strong modern independent lady. Raised by her father, she has learnt to stand up for herself but also she has a certain amount of naivety. Truly meets Caractacus who throws her off balance and challenges her. This opens her eyes and gradually she shifts into loving mother figure and wife. In the film version, the Child Catcher is A-grade frightening. What was your first impression when you first saw your co-star Dean Maynard in full prosthetics regalia? Well, yes, seeing the Child Catcher in full costume still sends a shiver up my spine especially with the slippery way he moves. Dean, in reality, is such a gentle, nice guy that its quite a weird comparison between the two. Previously you played Liesel in The Sound of Music which little girl didnt dream of being her when they grew up? Did you love it? I had a wonderful time, made some now long-time friends and got to act like a teenager at the age of 23! As well as a West End star, youre also a qualified yoga instructor. But whats the dippiest holistic discipline/treatment youve come across? Uncommon cleansing techniques always provoke wonderment I stuck a piece of string up my nose and caught it at the back of my throat once. It cleans the back nasal/ throat cavity, that is if youre not gagging. It does help you breathe better so there is method in the madness!
