Dominique Cottrez admitted suf- focating them, as officers continued searching two houses of horror in northern France for missing bodies. Her husband, Pierre-Marie Cott- rez, was also arrested but released on bail after claiming he knew noth- ing about the killings or that his wife had been pregnant so often. He suggested his wifes 133kg (21st) bulk might have helped con- ceal her pregnancies, which oc- curred between 1989 and 2005. The couple have two daughters, aged 22 and 21, plus grandchil- dren. They were arrested on Wednesday after buyers of their former home in Villers-au-Tertre, near Douai, cleared a garden pond and discov- ered two tiny bodies sealed in bags. Police who raided the couples new property, half a mile away in the same village, found a further six bodies in a garage. Prosecutor Eric Vaillant said yes- terday: She admitted suffocating the babies at birth. When she became aware she was pregnant she decided she did not want any more children and did not go to see a doctor for contra- ception. Her first delivery had gone badly and there were clearly problems thereafter. As for Mr Cottrez, the sky is fall- ing on his head, he told us. He told us that he was absolutely not aware that his wife was pregnant. The couples 21-year-old told a local newspaper: We never noticed anything. She had her moments of weari- ness, its true, but she worked nearly 24 hours a day between her job as a home help and her housework. Reports last night suggested that Cottrez, a 46-year-old nursing as- sistant, confessed to killing two more babies, though no more bod- ies had yet been discovered. Cottrez has been charged with manslaughter, after the couple ap- peared before a court in Douai, near Lille. Charges of concealing the bodies and failing to report the crimes were dropped against Mr Cottrez, 47. A shocked neighbour described Cottrez as a lovely woman who was devoted to other family mem- bers and especially children, while saying the couple appeared pillars of the community.
